Madeira Reimagined: A Destination Showcase
Last week, Mundus and our award winning DMC ECMeetings Portugal had the pleasure of co-hosting a destination showcase in partnership Belmond’s Reid’s Palace, welcoming eight leading UK incentive agencies to explore Madeira through a curated, immersive experience.
Over three days, we revealed the island’s vast potential for the MICE industry – not only as a destination of natural beauty and cultural richness, but as a location that delivers meaningful, high-quality experiences for discerning groups.
Why Madeira?
Repeatedly voted Europe’s top island destination, Madeira offers a rare combination: dramatic natural landscapes, a mild year-round climate, vibrant culture, and refined hospitality.
From mountaintop sunrises to Michelin-level cuisine, the island is an ideal canvas for incentive programs, leadership retreats, and bespoke group experiences. It’s accessible, yet surprising. Sophisticated, yet soulful.
Day 1 – A warm welcome to Funchal
Our journey began with an introduction to Madeira’s culinary scene and cultural heritage:
- Lunch at Kampo by Chef Julio Pereira – An elevated, ingredient-focused dining experience showcasing the best of the island’s produce.
- Cable Car to Monte & Basket Sledge Ride – A light-hearted, memorable encounter with Madeira’s traditions, offering a unique activity for incentive groups.
- Tuk Tuk Transfer to Blandy’s Wine Lodge – A creative and fun way to explore Funchal, culminating in a private wine tasting and guided tour.
- Site Visit: Reid’s Palace, A Belmond Hotel – One of the most iconic properties in the region, blending old-world elegance with impeccable service.
- Dinner at Cipriani – Refined Italian cuisine with Atlantic views, offering an exceptional dining space for VIP groups.
Day 2 – Discovery Through Contrast
The second day offered a deeper look at Madeira’s diverse landscapes and authentic charm:
- 4×4 Jeep Safari – From coastal cliffs to volcanic peaks, the off-road adventure revealed the island’s untamed side and panoramic beauty.
- Quinta do Barbusano Wine Experience – Hosted by Antonio Freitas, this visit combined wine tasting with traditional Madeiran dishes, all set in a scenic vineyard backdrop.
- Dinner at Design Centre Nini Andrade – An architecturally striking venue that merges art, design, and fine cuisine – a standout option for high-end gala dinners or welcome receptions.
Day 3 – A thoughtful finale
The final morning delivered what many guests described as the highlight of the entire showcase:
- Sunrise breakfast over the clouds – At over 1,800m elevation, the group enjoyed a private breakfast above the clouds. It was a calm, cinematic moment that captured the soul of the island and underscored the power of thoughtful planning.
A final mountaintop coffee and we were on our way – reflecting on the experience, the potential, and the island’s ability to surprise.
